MEET THE AUTHOR
Lord
Jeffrey Archer, former Parliamentarian and a member of the House of
Lords, has lived all the lives of a very well bred and clever cat.
When he faced financial ruin, he took the lemon and made a frosty
pitcher of sweet lemonade, splashing into the world of publishing with
a bestselling first novel. He is from a background of advantage, but
beyond his inherited position he has carved out a career as a
politician, journalist, and commentator. During the period of mourning
for Princess Diana in 1997, Archer was omnipresent on television,
adding a steady, informative voice to the medium's flood of
commentary.
Fans of Archer's
novels would not have been surprised. Real public figures are
regularly incorporated into his fiction, including Ted Kennedy (Shall
We Tell the President?) and Saddam Hussein (Honor Among Thieves).
In fact, because of its decision to publish Shall We Tell the
President? Viking lost budding editor Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis,
who objected to her former brother-in-law being used as a pivotal
character in a work of fiction.
Archer has a knack for
"novelography." In The Fourth Estate, he turned media
moguls Rupert Murdoch and the late Robert Maxwell into his main
characters. He told an interviewer that he read more than 30
biographies of the two men, and that about 80 percent of the novel was
true. Archer generally writes several drafts; for The Fourth Estate,
it was 19. |

As a member of the British House of Lords
and as former member of Parliament, Jeffrey Archer knows some of the
most powerful people in the world. Indeed, the acknowledgements of
this closely plotted thriller include current and former members of
the American CIA, FBI, NSA, Secret Service, and a former U.S. attorney
general. From this background, Archer weaves a tale that follows his
hero, CIA assassin Connor Fitzgerald, while simultaneously shadowing
his bosses in Washington.
The opening chapters feature
unrelenting action as Connor tracks and kills a Colombian presidential
candidate and starts a chain of events that could lead to a new Cold
War. But, despite his ruthless background, Connor is not a cold and
hollow plot device. He's an American Medal of Honor winner who is
committed to his country, but also to his spiritual home, Ireland.
Archer even pauses briefly to flesh out Connor's family life and the
tensions of living with secrets that his wife and beloved daughter
suspect but will never know. This character work pays off as the
reader follows Connor through several nations and nearly as many
identities. Gradually, Connor is caught in Russia between two power
brokers: CIA director Helen Dexter and President Tom Lawrence. Dexter
needs her 28-year veteran agent dead or "disappeared" in a
Russian prison. But President Lawrence also needs Connor so he can
finally rid himself of Dexter's tacit control of U.S. foreign policy.
In the end, Connor must rely on old
friends and native intelligence if he is to make it to his retirement
alive. Fans of political intrigue, James Bond, and Tom Clancy will be
drawn inexorably along for the ride. --Patrick O'Kelley |

Utilizing his extensive theatrical
experience, Martin Jarvis handles the difficult task of narrating
Jeffrey Archer's bestseller, The Fourth Estate, quite
admirably. As in his extremely popular novel, Kane & Abel,
Archer has once again created dual protagonists--in this case,
chronicling the parallel lives of two rival media tycoons, each bent
on global domination of the newspaper industry. Because of this doubly
complex plot device, the narrator must possess a very flexible voice
to differentiate not only the two lead characters, but each of their
large supporting casts as well. Jarvis tackles the challenge quite
capably.
Although the work is billed as fiction,
the personalities and events bear a striking resemblance to actual
stories seen in headlines. So recognizable, in fact, that lawsuits
were filed in an effort to halt publication of Archer's book
altogether. Perhaps that can explain his relatively safe, methodical
effort here. As usual, he has devised an absorbing and intricate plot,
but the story follows the action forward so closely that there is
little time allowed for insight into the character's motivations or
for philosophical narrative. Still, Archer's considerable talent as a
storyteller and the noteworthy performance by the very talented Jarvis
make The Fourth Estate a compelling look at the cause and
effect of ruthless corporate behavior and provides an intriguing peek
behind closed boardroom doors. |

Here, from the author of such monumental
bestsellers as Kane and Abel and As the Crow flies, is an ingeniously
plotted thriller that is as up-to-the-minute as today's headlines. In
Washington, D.C., in the spring of 1993, it is the dawn of a new
political era - but six thousand miles away in the impoverished
streets of Baghdad, there is a growing disillusionment with the
unelected president. Sensing the mood of the people, Saddam Hussein
moves boldly to settle scores with the United States. Using $100
million as bait, Saddam gathers into his web three key players: a
powerful American Mafia boss; the world's greatest forger; and, most
crucially a special assistant to the President of the United States,
Bill Clinton. Saddam's goal is to embarrass the U.S. by stealing part
of its history - then destroying that symbol in front of the world's
media. With the help of a sophisticated criminal underworld that
exhibits Swiss-watch timing, and a skilled actor who is transformed
through plastic surgery into a stand-in for Bill Clinton, he sets
about his brilliant scheme. As the countdown begins to July 1993 -
potentially the most humiliating day in U.S. history - two lovers, a
beautiful Mossad agent and a dashing American professor who advises
the CIA, turn out to be a far more formidable weapon than any Patriot
missile. In what is sure to be hailed as the suspense novel of the
year, master storyteller Jeffrey Archer reminds us that the things
worth dying for are sometimes to be found in the words that define our
historic values. |

Here, from the world's greatest
storyteller, Jeffrey Archer, are twelve ingeniously plotted stories
that display his renowned ability for the unpredictable, but wholly
satisfying, twist. Even more inventive than his previous bestselling
short story collections, Twelve Red Herrings contains a dozen
startling tales, each of which makes use of misleading clues to
surprise the reader. You'll read about a woman who fools her husband
and her lover on the same day; a leading lawyer's attempt to prove his
client is not blind; an honored guest whose expectations are something
more than the red carpet; a young painter who finds an unlikely way to
call attention to herself; and a woman whose casual ride into the
country becomes such a gauntlet of terror that by the last page you'll
be shaking with fear. In each of these stories, human beings are put
under pressure - how do they react when they have an opportunity to
seize, a crucial problem to solve, a danger to avoid? Displaying all
the Archer hallmarks, from relentless pacing to sophisticated glamour,
Twelve Red Herrings offers two additional rewards. For the first time,
in the final story, a choice of four endings is offered, testifying to
the range of Archer's imagination and the suppleness of the writer's
art. Also, there is buried in each story a diversion of another kind -
let us simply call it a red herring - which Archer challenges his
readers to uncover. Who will be the first to spot all twelve? |
