Melville Davisson PostThe Post stories of Uncle Abner predate the Golden Age, appearing between 1913 and 1918, but they deserve recognition since they foreshadow the tough, 'hard-boiled' character of many later American mysteries - but this time in a rural setting, remote Virginia in the nineteenth century. Abner, as seen through the eyes of his nephew the narrator, is a stern instrument of divine retribution on murderers and thieves.
