summary

Fushigi Yuugi, which means "mysterious play", is the story of a school girl named Miaka Yuuki, who discovers an ancient Chinese novel, The Universe of the Four Gods. The book actually contains a spell which transports Miaka and her best friend Yui to (you guessed it) ancient China. Yui and Miaka are seperated, but luckily Miaka makes friends with a handsome, but money obsessed guy named Tamahome, and Hotohori, the emperor of Konan. Hotohori appoints Miaka the preistess of the local god, a red phoenix, Suzaku. As Suzaku no Miko, Miaka must find the seven people destined to be Suzaku's warriors and lead them to protect Konan.

While searching for Miaka, Yui finds herself in the neighboring Koutou, and, convinced that Miaka has abandoned her, becomes the preistess of Koutou's god, Seiryu, a blue dragon. Miaka and Yui are now enemies.

This series, which is meant for young girls, is cute and funny, but can also be very serious. Most of the plot centers around love, duty, and betrayal. The animation style is cute and clever; the music is mysterious- sounding and peppy at turns, but always poignant. The imagery and feel are based on Chinese myth, and everything is very, very pretty.

Makoto says:
Now your talking! Fushigi Yuugi is complicated to comprehend. Plus it's
not really officially released. The only way you can get Yuugi is through
fansubs. But trust me it is goood. I love the characters... Tamahome,
Miaka, Yui, Hoto-chan, Nuriko... they're all so cool! Good Good anime.

It has a nice plot that i found a little difficult to understand but... i
think over all it's great! The fansub i have is really well done with
backround FYI's at the credits and both english and japanese subs of
the main theme, "For My Darling," which i might add, i like very much.
The comedy between Miaka and Tamahome in the first few episodes is very
silly and i find myself laughing every time.

Michiru says:
Without a doubt, Fushigi Yuugi is on my top three list of favorite anime.
It's adorable, funny, and clever. I love the mythology woven into the plot,
and how we get to see both serious and silly sides of all the characters.

My favorite characters are Yui (scorpio) and Hotohori (aries. not that i
particularly like aries..); these two characters both feel that the
weight of the world is on their shoulders. Unlike Miaka, Yui and Hotohori
have to make their decisions on their own, with no support and very little
companionship. Leave it to me to pick out the most unhappy characters in a
lighthearted show. :)
