summary

Ghost in the Shell is the story of a cyborg in a computer-dominated future, and her search for her own humanity - her quest to understand her "ghost". The secret government agency she works for, Section Nine, calls upon her to investigate an illusive hacker, able to pry into a cyborg's "ghost", and so powerful that he is nicknamed The Puppet Master. As the Major and the Puppet Master move towards each other, and begin to learn more about one another, they find more in common than either one first expected.

Set in a dark, haunting city and full of techno-gothic imagery, Ghost in the Shell is able to be philosophical and action-packed at (somewhat jarring) intervals. The animation is just about as good as it can get, the music is spectacular. We highly recommend this film.

characters

Major Motoko Kusanagi - a sexy cyborg with a thing for scuba-diving.

The Puppet Master - a mysterious entity "born from the sea of
information", who, like Motoko, longs for its existance to mean more
than awareness.

Batou - Motoko's friend and co-worker at section nine

special points

The main song in Ghost in the Shell is in ancient Japanese, and it's called "The Promise of the Future". The translation reads:

When you are dancing, a beautiful lady becomes drunken
When you are dancing, a shining moon rings.
A god descends for a wedding and dawn approaches,
While the night bird sings.

God bless you.

what we think

Makoto says:
Ghost in the Shell, like Akira is a animated masterpeice. I can't say
i like this movie as much as i did Akira though. I didn't find the
characters apealing except the major and batou. I did, however, find
the animation *very* appealing. the noir setting was nicely displayed
and the characters were perfectly drawn adn animated. the movement was
beautiful. every thing. beautiful.

one of my favourite animated sequence was just after the title credits
ended- after Mokoto gets her tune up. She wakes up, sit up and rubs her
eye then get's up and goes into the other room. don't ask me why but for
some reason i find that sequence amazing animated. so life like.

Mamoru Oshii's next film is "Blood" which is a vampire thriller. He's
using the same technique for this film as he did for Ghost. 3 dimentional
backrounds with 2 dimentional subjects. It looks good!

So there you have it. my little rant on why Ghost ing the Shell is soooo
beautiful. go out now and rent it! now i say! now! it's goooood.

Michiru says:
I wrote the thing at the top. :)
