As this nineteenth-century box camera demonstrates, the optical prinicpals of photography were well understood and used by artists to aid in drawing. Light rays passing through the aperture are projected onto the opposite side and form a picture of the bright objects outside. The device has been around as early as the time of Aristotle in the fourth century B.C.
