Type or (write out with a metallic pen on black) family favorite recipes for a new family member, cut them out, decorate and decoupage them onto a wooden box. The box becomes a recipe box for her, with family favorite recipes on the outside.
Also, decoupage a wall in the kitchen with
RECIPES!!! Or, do this with a kitchen cupboard or bookcase you pick
up at a yard sale. Just make sure to use varnish (or apply sealer,
or shellac) when you're done. Store
recipe books in the cupboard or bookcase.
For a different look, don't worry if the
entire recipe shows on these decor options, just overlap & let them
flow all over the place. You can even tear all the paper edges for
one of the latest looks in decorating. The
paper tears easily if you fold it several
times, moisten the edge, and then tear it. Also, the look is frequently
different depending on which direction you tear it in (up or down).
What you will need:
Various pillows in different shapes
Silk roses
Wire cutters
Hot glue gun
1. Use the wire cutters to snip off each flower stem close to it's base.
2. Pull off the calyx and then snip the stem to within 1/16 of the base of the flower.
3. Apply hot glue around the stem to prevent the flower petals from falling off. Let cool.
4. Attach the roses with the hot glue gun to the surface of the pillow. You can use pins to place the flowers on the pillow to see if the pattern you want works then glue them to the surface of the pillow. You don't have to follow a particular pattern. you can go all solid or match the pillows to your furnishings, choosing a few colors that will accent your sofa or bedspread.
5. On the back side of pillow place silk leaves from the stem of the flowers and hot glue in various patterns.
To save money purchase the flowers in bunches.
You can also have the pillow scented by
placing the silk flowers in a sealable container and place dry
potpourri scent in the container and seal
for several days or use scent oils.
Supplies:
•Pin-weaving Express board or piece of
foam core (available at any art supply store)
•Straight pins
•20" pillow form
•44 assorted ribbon strips in 22" lengths,
7/8" - 1" wide (2 1/2 yds. of ribbon equals 4 strips)
•Two 22"x 22" squares of decorator fabric
•Needle & thread
•Scissors
•Large safety pin or Pin-weaving Shuttle
•Iron
Directions:
1. Cut 44 ribbons each 22" long.
2. Lay one piece decorator fabric on pin-weaving board, right side up. Line up with board & pin corners securely. (Using fabric will give the pillow a "softer" look. However, you may also use a square of light weight fusible interfacing. Place interfacing on board, fusible side up. When weaving is complete, iron ribbon to interfacing.)
3. Lay ribbons right side up vertically (warp), pinning top of ribbon to board over the fabric. It is helpful to angle pins outward slightly. Make sure ribbons hang straight & close together, but not overlapping. (TIP: Pins should be angled outward slightly for better hold.)
4. After the warp ribbons have been pinned to the board, begin to weave the horizontal (weft) ribbons. It is helpful to pin a large safety pin to end of ribbon or use a pin-weaving shuttle to weave ribbon. Weave ribbon over & under each vertical strip. Be careful to line up the ribbon & push close to top. Pin each end of ribbon to board, making sure ribbon is pulled tight. Weave second row in same way, alternating opposite the first row. Continue until square is completely woven.
5. When all weaving is complete, hand baste around outside edge of weaving to secure ribbons to fabric. Make sure ribbons are straight. Press.
6. Place right sides of woven pieces & second fabric square together. Pin & machine stitch with 1/2" seam allowance around 3 sides of pillow. Make sure your stitch lines up between edges of ribbons. Trim excess edges & corners. Turn & press both sides.
Supplies:
•2 yds 54" wide silk
•1-1/3 yds 45" wide fleece
•Stuffing
Directions For Woven Silk Pillow:
1. Cut two (2) 20" x 20" squares of silk.
2. Cut twenty (20) 4" x 21" pieces of silk.
3. Cut twenty (20) 3-1/2" x 21" pieces of fleece.
4. Place one strip of fleece on wrong side of each strip of silk. Fold in half lengthwise, wrong sides together. Stitch scant 1/4" seam. Repeat, all 20 strips.
5. Fold strips so seam is in center of back side.
6. Use cardboard or pin-weaving board. Center one silk 20" x 20" square on top of board with right side up.
7. Using pins, attach a strip, with the right side up, to the upper left hand corner of the silk square. Repeat this process with the strips, working your way across the top of the square.
8. When all of the strips are in place, turn the square 90 degrees around and repeat step #7, using the remaining strips. Weave the strips under and over in an alternating fashion, creating a checkered pattern.
9. Baste strips in place.
10. Pin on 20" x 20" back with right sides together. Stitch around edges with 5/8" seam, leaving opening for turning.
11. Turn inside out, stuff and stitch opening closed by hand.
This luxurious pillow is the perfect accent
for your couch, bed or favorite chair. Use a variety of silky colors to
custom match your home decor, creating a unique look for every room. You
can even weave contrasting colors to create an interesting checkerboard
effect. Let your imagination run wild, and when you're done, you can rest
your head on your new woven silk
pillow!
Supplies:
•Foam core board (standard 40" x 36" piece)
•2/3 yds. of 54" decorator fabric
•1 1/2 yds. fringe
•X-acto knife
•Hot glue gun, glue
•2/3 yd. polyester
batting
•Staple gun
Directions For Simple Cornice Board:
1. Cut foam core in half, lengthwise,
creating a workable piece 40" x 15" or 18".
2. Measure width of window and add 2" for return. Cut length of foam core to this measurement.
3. Mark the center of the board and measure up about 5" from bottom edge. Draw cutting lines from bottom corner to center mark to form inverted 'V' shape. Use X-acto knife to cut board on drawn lines.
4. Score the board 1" from each end on front side of board and bend back to create a return.
5. Cut batting to fit front of cornice. Glue batting to front of board.
6. Cut fabric 2" larger than the foam board on all sides. Place over batting and glue edges to back of board. Clip fabric at inverted 'V' section and corners to create a smooth fit.
7. Glue fringe on bottom edge.
8. Mount to window frame with a staple gun.
A simple and inexpensive way to add a whole new dimension to your home decor. You can match the colors and patterns of this window cornice to your existing pillows, furniture and/or carpet. Or, you can match the cornice boards with new pillows and/or slipcovers to create an entirely different look to all of your rooms.
