Chunky Candles
Supplies:
•Block Premium Candle Wax (approx. 2 lbs. per candle)
Metal Mold (size, shape of your choice)
Candle Thermometer
Wick Bar; Mold Sealer
Pkg. Wax Chunks (Multi, White, Red, or desired)
Translucent Crystals; Metal Core Wicking
Block Concentrated Candle Scent or Liquid Aromatherapy Scents (your choice of scent)
Block Concentrated Candle Dye (your choice of color)
•Scissors
•Cardboard Box (larger than the block of wax)
•Hammer
•Chisel or Screwdriver
•Stove •Melting/Pouring Container w/Spout
•Thin Dowel
•Ruler
•Refrigerator (optional)
•Plastic or Newspaper (to protect work area)

Preparation:
1. Cover work area with plastic or newspaper.
2. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for all products used.
3. Work near stove. Do not leave melting wax unattended!
4. Avoid scratches, dents, dust, or foreign matter in mold. Do not scratch interior of mold with a sharp instrument or abrasive. Do not strike mold with a hard object. Store in a warm, dry place to prevent rusting; keep covered to protect interior from dust.
5. As wax sets, it shrinks, forming a depression in center of candle.

Procedure:
1. To prepare mold, insert wick from underside of mold; thread through hole until it reaches top of mold. Place wick bar across opening of mold; secure wick to bar. Pull wick taut at base of mold; secure with retainer screw. Cut wick 1" from screw; wind wick end counter clockwise under head of screw.  Tighten screw; secure with mold sealer to prevent seepage.
2. Fill candle mold to within 1" of top of mold with desired color of wax chunks.
3. To prepare wax, place wax block into cardboard box; use hammer and chisel or screwdriver to break wax block into small pieces. Place thermometer into pouring/melting container; fill melting container with wax pieces; heat to 210 degrees. Add translucent crystals; leave on heat until crystals are melted; remove from heat. Allow to cool to 190 degrees.
4. If using block dye, shave 1/8 of block for approximately 2 lbs. of wax; add to hot wax. If using liquid dye, follow manufacturer’s instructions.
5. If using block scent, shave 1/8 of block; add to hot wax. If using liquid scent, follow manufacturer’s instructions. Do not add too much scent; excess oil may cause mottling on candle surface.
6. To pour wax, tilt mold slightly; pour wax slowly; fill to desired height for candle; reserve one cup of wax. Allow to set for one hour. Push the dowel into candle on one side of wick to relieve pressure; avoid touching edge of mold; remove dowel. Repeat procedure on other side of wick. Reheat the reserved wax; pour into hole created by dowel. Do not pour the wax
beyond previous pour. Allow to set for one hour. Repeat procedure again, if needed.
7. To set the candle quickly, place in refrigerator once the mold is warm to the touch and can be handled comfortably. When mold is cold to the touch, candle should drop easily from the mold. Remove the screw from wick; tilt mold until candle drops out. If it doesn't readily drop from mold, refrigerate until it does.

Assateague Lighthouse Candles
submitted by CD Beals

MATERIALS
8-by-8-inch sheet of white honeycomb beeswax
9-inch length of wicking
Red and black honeycomb beeswax
Yellow decorating beeswax

Cut a 3-inch-wide piece from one end of your white beeswax sheet. Cut the remaining rectangle in half on the diagonal. Lay the wick along the 8-inch side of the triangle and roll it up on the diagonal. From the red and remaining white beeswax, cut a few 1 1/2-inch-wide strips.  Beginning at the base, wrap a red band, then a white one, then a red one, until it's as tall as you like.

Next, cut a 3/4-inch strip of black beeswax and position it above the last red band. Trim off any of the base color showing above the black wax, and work a hunk of black wax into a skinny snake. Wrap the snake around the candle between the top red band and the black tip. Then make a little black cap for the lighthouse roof and cut or shape yellow rectangles for windows.

To make a lighthouse keeper's cottage at the base of the candle, cut two strips of beeswax about 1 inch wide and about 3 inches long. Press them together gently, fold them to form the walls of the house, and attach them to the side of the lighthouse. For the roof, cut two strips of black wax about 2 1/2 inches long and 1 inch wide, press them together and trim them to fit against the curved side of the candle. For the finishing touch, add a window on each side of the house.
