Bill and Mary, who had been a couple for more than six months, took a vacation together to the Cayman islands in the Caribbean.  One afternoon, several days after they had arrived, they were having a drink in an outdoor lounge near the beach.  It was a gorgeous tropical day kissed by sunshine and balmy winds,  They began to chat with three couples seated nearby, and found they had much in common.  After sharing stories, backgrounds and previous vacations, the couples decided they would like to rent a schooner, share expenses, and tour the islands by sea. They located a fine ship and negotiated with the owner until they agreed upon a fee, and two days later, on a fine, warm day filled with sunshine and fair winds, they set out on their adventure.
It was early morning, and they were soon far out to sea.  Dolphins played alongside the boat for a time, bobbing and seemingly guarding the ship as it cruised under full sail, the bow plunging in and out of the waves, the scent of the sea all about them. The skipper, a crusty bearded sailor named Joshua, who looked more the part of a pirate than a schooner captain, warned the party that weather changed rapidly in that part of the world during the late summer, and violent storms were not unusual.  The group, enjoying the sea breezes and gulls flitting about, felt his warnings were purely precautionary, and urged him and his crew of three on as they basked in the sun and sipped on various cold beverages they had stocked on board.  Joshua also informed his passengers they would be at sea all of the first day, and would not reach any of the remote islands until the next day.
The charter included meals, and the four couples ate lunch and dinner in the ship's dining room.  They had brought their own supply of wine and other beverages, and made merry, drinking and laughing together.
When evening came, all grouped out on deck to watch the sunset, magnificent on the ocean that night, a ball of yellow fire disappearing on the horizon, coloring the clouds in reds and yellows.  When the sun dipped below the horizon, the sky darkened, and night was upon them.

It was their first night at sea, and the ocean was calm, waves slapping gently against the ship as they sailed along, and in the privacy of their cabins, the couples, as if synchronized, began to make love.  The crew members, their cabin adjoining, heard the goings-on, and began to joke about it.  Larry, a husky man with a barrel chest and long blonde hair that reached below his neck, listened for a time and turned to his companions.
"That damn Joshua won't let us bring our women along.  How the hell are we supposed to sleep with those guys screwing their brains out next to us?"
Jimmy Stratton, the youngest of the three, a wiry slender lad, grinned at him.
"When in doubt, one must take matters in hand," he said, pointing at Larry's pile of Jugs, Penthouse and Playboy magazines beneath his bunk.  A woman's moans and urgings filtered through the walls.  Larry reached under his bunk and pulled out several Penthouse magazines and spread them out on the small table they used for playing cards.
"Take your choice," he said.  "I'm going to my bunk.  I can't take this."
More moaning, this time from several of the staterooms, then a scream of ecstasy.
"Me, either," Jimmy said.  "How about you, Randy?"  He looked over at the third crew member, Randy Dickson, a tall rangy man about Larry's age who never shaved and had a scraggly brown beard and intense dark eyes.
"If they keep that up, I might sneak into one of their cabins and have a go with a real one," he said, his voice as dark as his eyes.
"Don't even think about it," Larry said.  "Ideas like that can get you in trouble."
Randy's eyes shifted slowly to Larry as he said, "You play with "Pete" all you want.  I'm too old for that shit."  He got up, stretched, and went to his bunk, sullen and quiet.
As the night wore on, the crew were settled in their bunks, but the sounds of passion from the passenger staterooms continued for what seemed like hours to the lonely men.

The next morning, the four couples awoke to the crew clamoring on deck, and rushed into their bathing suits to see what the commotion was about.  When Bill and Mary reached the deck, they saw several members of the crew pointing off the starboard bow, and they walked over to look.  One of the more salty members of the crew, dressed in jeans and boat shoes and no shirt, turned to them and pointed out over the water.  He uttered a single word, "Sharks,"
Bill and Mary and the other three couples held onto the rail and looked out.  The morning was balmy, the sea placid, the sun well up over the horizon, filtering through an early morning haze.  There they were.  One shark was swimming nearby and they could see him clearly.

It was a Tiger shark, over fifteen feet long, frightening in its size and silent strength, cruising effortlessly along  They could see more of them, fins occasionally jutting out of the water.  Then, apparently attracted by some source of food, they dove beneath the water and disappeared.
"Can be nasty when they get hungry," Bill heard and turned around.
Joshua stood behind them, looking out at the placid waters where the sharks had been.  He wore jeans and a T-shirt with a photograph of his ship on the front.
"I'm glad we're up here and not down there with them," Bill said.
Joshua looked out over the sea, and seemed to be smelling the air.
"Weather coming," he said.  "Hope we make land before long."
"Is there a problem? Bill said.
Mary reached over and put her hand on his bare arm.
Joshua nodded toward the horizon and the clouds forming.
"Never know, this time of year," Joshua said as he turned and walked toward the stern.
