Try covering the area where you plan to set out your tomatoes with plastic.
Black is good, but this spring I'm going to try to find some red. I've heard that red works the best.
It's something to do with the way that it reflects the sun light.
Not only will it keep you from having to weed, but it will hold the days' heat in and around the roots at night, (which is good for tomatoes), and it helps the soil to hold moisture around the plants.
Don't try it with peppers though, I did and it was a disaster.
It stunted the plants and even killed some of them.
