Background Magdalena was born into slavery in Rumania, a place where (in 1533) the Roma have been enslaved for four hundred years. Suffice to say her childhood was very, very hard and full of misery.
That is until she escaped from enslavement at the age of twelve, when her parents sent her out on a stormy night to find her destiny, and to roam freely as they could no longer do. Leaving Rumania and escaping from her Turkish masters, she wandered to the east for many weeks alone until she was found by the Kumpania and adopted by us.
Her life truly began again at that time, and every day of freedom has been sweet and precious to her. She loves her music because it brings her family closer to her. Although life for her Vitsa has been hard, her music sustains her. She may argue and bicker with some of the rest of us occasionally, but it is only playing, and she respects her new family very much. (Even Milosh, who she respects for his brilliant musical ability at other instruments -- she just wishes he would leave the fiddle to her!)
Her greatest hope is that one day she will see her parents again, and that Nikolai will arrange a marriage for her so that she may have children to pass her music down to. She is widely known as (along with Valentina) one of the most cheerful Gypsies in the Kumpania, and is always busy trying to mediate squabbles that arise out of the kindness of her heart.
