Flashbacks, crying, you just don't feel right. Questions unanswered, dread and despair; There is no freedom; no one to care. You are trained to do and not to think. Telling? Forget it, I won't sleep a wink. But courage will come and one day you'll tell. But don't despair if they don't take it real well. No matter what they say, you are not to blame You are a victim that should not feel this pain. Keep telling until, someone will see. Protections is needed; truth will set you free. Sometimes in telling, you'll feel violated again. But recovery will come if only you begin. There is no escaping the facts you must face. Forgive yourself in this long, hard race. There will be nights of terror and days of dread. Sometimes you'll struggle to get out of bed. You'll want to hide and scream and shout. It will be awful; there is no doubt. The blackness enfolds the child within. Death seems so welcome before you begin. But there is a pin-drop of light at the top of the well. The climb to enlightenment, so hard you can tell. A whisper, a whimper, the echoes sound so deep. You feel dirty, so small, so weak. You're like a child with no happiness to recall, compared to the terror of it all. But there is no escaping the reminders so bleak from the times you were made to feel like a freak. Love and anger fight in the night. Confusion added to a sorrowful plight. Emotions you'll feel; they are so real. Place the blame where it belongs, don't make any deals. Forgive yourself; you are not the one to blame in this cruel but not unusual game. Recovery will come if only you begin. Speak out, survive and live again. *The poem was written by Brandy Cohen of Augusta, GA for the Take Back the Night rally of 1998 at Augusta State University.
